Legalize Black Hairstyles T-Shirt Seen on Good Morning America
Our t-shirt ‘Legalize Black Hairstyles’ was seen on Good Morning America yesterday during Detroit Hairstylist Niani B's Braid Like a Boss Segment.
For so many reasons this was amazing to see because when I created this shirt it was out of the frustration around the way Black women/girls (and men/boys) are treated in corporate america and schools regarding their hair.
Yes, in 2020 we cannot choose to wear our hair in braids, locs, an Afro (which is how some of our hair grows from our scalp)...we are forced to straighten and “groom” our hair to make others comfortable.
Did you know there is an entire Bill, The Crown Act, to end hair discrimination in every state. That’s crazy that this is necessary!
But our shirt was a way to start “hard” conversations. To have others question what this meant when they read it.
So, to see our t-shirt on GMA yesterday and to know that people saw this message all around the world is pretty dope to me! I’m hopeful that one day a girl can go to school with pink braids to take her school pictures and she will not be suspended or sent home. Or that a woman can confidently show up to her executive board meeting with her textured Afro and not feel scared that she may be intimidating others. Or a young man can wear locs without being seen as a threat.
