While we were celebrating auntie Viola and shaking our heads at yet another announcement snafu textured hair was stealing the show this awards season. Protective styles and natural curls have been disrupting “traditional” expectations of formal beauty looks for quite a few years now but this season they seemed right at home. With “Hidden Figures”, “Orange is the New Black, “Moonlight” and others highlighting the diversity of black characters our stories were only outshone by our style. Check out a few of our favorite looks from this year’s awards season below.
1) Tracee Ellis Ross at the Golden Globes
This under celebrated comedic genius not only made history when she stepped to the podium to accept her well deserved Golden Globe, the ‘Blackish’ star made a huge style statement complimenting her decadent Zuhair Murad gown with a fantastically full textured ponytail. Get the look by adding flexrods to our bulk kinky hair. Don’t forget to pick it out with a rat tailed comb.
2) Alvina Stewart at the Screen Actor Guilds Awards
Alvina Stewart sparkled next to her husband Anthony Anderson on the red carpet at the Screen Actor Guild Awards. She highlighted her peach colored gown with golden charms at her chest length locks. Recreate Alvina's look by snagging a few of our handmade hair charms.
3) Issa Rae at the Golden Globes
Anyone else having 'Insecure' withdrawals? Ugh, anyway has anyone noticed how Issa Rae is just killing it on the Red Carpet this award season or is it just us? Issa's hair stylist, Felicia Leatherwood, has no chill when it comes to creating magic with her natural hair. This style screamed elegant in the front--but honey there was a party going on in the back!
4) Janelle Monae’ at the Critics Choice Awards
The Best Supporting Actress nominee went for a playful look in a harlequin printed dress. She also sported two relaxed buns on either side of her head and allowed curly tendrils to frame her face. We absolutely love how whimsy her hairstylist Nikki Nelms is getting with all of her looks this season.
5) Samara Wiley at the Screen Actor Guild Awards
While the halls of Litchfield Correction Facility will never be the same without our dearly departed Poussey we’re excited to say hello to Samara’s style. The actress wore her short curls artfully tousled for her first post-prison red carpet appearance. Get the look by trying the 10" extra small curl from our McKenzie Collection.
